Appointment System Update

Last October we made a necessary change to our appointment system to allow patients extended access to clinicians where it would be more convenient for them.

You can now pre-book an appointment, with your choice of clinician, up to 2-3 weeks in advance for routine and non-urgent issues.

We are still accessible from 8am every weekday (expect bank holidays) for URGENT and ON THE DAY EMERGENCIES. Please note that where possible we will aim to provide continuity of care, but this isn’t always possible for urgent and on the day emergencies. For any routine enquiries, you will be asked to call back after 11am to discuss these further.

You no longer have to attend the surgery at 8am to arrange an appointment, our telephone system has been upgraded to include a call back option, this in turn reduces your wait time on the phones and we will call you back as soon as reasonably possible. Again, if your query is routine then a call back will be placed after 11am whilst we deal with the urgent demand for the day.

What services do we navigate to?

From time to time a presenting condition requires more specialist input, this is because a procedure such as suturing, an x-ray or urgent blood tests is required to assess and manage the condition. Therefore, an alternative service could be more appropriate for you to attend or contact to ensure that you are receiving the best possible care. These services include:

Local Urgent Treatment Centres

Locally we are fortunate to have the Oadby Urgent Care Centre, currently this is mainly accessible via NHS 111 with limited access available for walk-in patients. Oadby Urgent Care Centre does not have x-ray facilities available.

Further afield, St Luke’s Treatment Centre Minor Injury Unit is available to patients who have had a minor accident that they cannot treat themselves. X-ray facilities are available.

Accident and Emergency or Emergency Ambulance via 999

You may be asked to attend Accident and Emergency or hang up the phone and dial 999 if our administrative team feel that your presenting condition warrants so. Conditions that require a time sensitive response are NOT suitable for the GP Surgery and require an assessment in hospital. The following conditions are applicable to this:

Chest Pain with ANY associated symptoms:
– Heavy chest
Stroke: Facial weakness or speech difficulties
– Cold or clammy skin, colour change
– Difficulty or unable to respond.
– Radiating to arm, neck, or jaw
Shortness of breath and:
– Unable to speak in sentences.
– Not responsive
– Difficulty breathing
– Possible severe sepsis
Serious Head Injury
Loss of consciousnessAcutely confused
Fits that are not stoppingSevere allergic reaction
Severe burns or scaldsMajor trauma
Severe bleedingOverdose and signs of being unwell

Our administrative team have been given the necessary tools to confidently navigate patients to an appropriate service that can effectively deal with the presenting issue. These services have been made available by NHS England to give patients a quicker and more convenient access to safe and high-quality healthcare. Therefore, if you present with any of the following conditions, you may be asked for consent for us to refer you to the Pharmacy First service:

Acute Otitis Media

Impetigo

Health and Wellbeing Team

Social prescribers are health professionals based in GP practices. We work closely with GPs to assist patients with their non-medical needs. We do this by helping them identify, ‘what matters to them’. Working collaboratively to create a care plan, which may include referrals into local services and organisations within the community.

Our hope is for patients to have a better quality of life. Ultimately supporting them to improve their overall health and wellbeing, via connecting them to community groups and statutory services for support. For example, social groups like games club, financial and benefit advisors, gardening clubs, sports programmes and much more.

Diagnostic Services

We are currently able to offer ROUTINE appointments for ECGs at the surgery, this service must be requested following a consultation with a GP.

Talking Therapies

Vita Health Group provide Talking Therapy services to adults aged 16 years and over who live and are registered with a GP in Leicester.
